How To Use?
STEP 1: Setting Intentions
Take a couple of minutes before you start to clear your mind and calm your heart. Remember, your intention is one of the most important elements of smudging. Now decide on a mantra to repeat aloud or in your mind while smudging that encapsulates your set intention.
Before burning your sage:
Remember to open all your windows before, during, and after cleansing. This creates a pathway for the unwanted energies to clear out.
STEP 2: Light your sage
1. Hold the sage at a 45-degree angle and light it using a match, a candle, or a lighter.
2. Allow the sage to burn for about 20 – 30 seconds.
3. Gently blow out the flame so you see orange embers on the end, releasing thick smoke.
STEP 3: Smudge yourself
Begin by smudging yourself and others clean before cleansing your house.
1. With one hand, direct the smoke around your body and space, while holding the sage in the other.
2. Allow the incense to linger on the areas of your body or surroundings you’d like to focus on.
STEP 4: Smudge your home
Start at the front door of the home. Then, begin to move slowly and mindfully, with care, walking clockwise around the entire interior perimeter of the home. Ensure you let the smoke enter all hidden corners. Once you’ve covered your entire home, you should return to where you began.
STEP 5: Extinguishing Your Sage
Dab the burning tip firmly into your fireproof vessel, dirt, or sand until the smoke no longer rises.
Avoid using water, since it may be difficult to reignite sage if it is extinguished by water.
IMPORTANT: Always be present! If you see little embers fall on the ground, tamp them out immediately. Never let the burning sage stay unattended for any reason. Also, take care not to inhale too much of the smoke.
